Care & Detail

Piqué? Isn't that the football player?

Admittedly. Piqué is indeed the last name of a former Spanish football player. But it's also the name of a versatile and popular fabric type, ideal for use in polos and shirts with a focus on maximum comfort.

In this blog post, we will enlighten you on what sets piqué apart from other fabric types and what its specific benefits are for you, whether you're considering or already wearing our short-sleeved piqué polo or long-sleeved piqué shirt.

Our newest fabric type in the permanent collection

But first, a little introduction to why we are dealing with this topic.

In the summer of 2022, we introduced The Ambassador Polo. The launch of the polo, which was a long-awaited addition to our permanent collection, coincided with the introduction of Michael Laudrup as our global brand ambassador.

The development of the polo has been underway for a long time and is continuously refined generation by generation. We have gone into detail to find the perfect fabric type that ensures you a timeless polo that lasts season after season.

From experience, we know that it can take a long time to create something that appears simple. But we believe we have reached a result that ensures you a formal and classic expression, while you experience the comfort you know from your t-shirts.

The result was The Ambassador Polo, which we also introduced in the fall of 2022 in a long-sleeved shirt variant called The Ambassador. Naturally, with all the same benefits.

A new form of flexibility and comfort, which you are guaranteed never to have experienced before in a BARONS shirt – the shirt you choose on a Sunday morning.

And then back to the introduction about what piqué is and what advantages this fabric type has for you.

What is piqué polo fabric?

Piqué fabric is a type of knit known for its unique texture and durability. It is typically made from cotton yarn, knitted in a specific pattern that gives the fabric a characteristic, ribbed surface.

The benefits for you are many…

Piqué is often used to make polos and casual shirts because it is breathable and comfortable, making it suitable for various leisure activities. Unlike woven fabric, piqué is knitted, ensuring you plenty of stretch without adding synthetic plastic fibers.

The fabric is durable and withstands many washes, when you wash it correctly. This is particularly due to the extra-long cotton fibers we use for the fabric in our polo.

When it comes to cotton, it's incredibly simple. The longer the fibers, the longer it lasts. The longer the fibers, the more comfortable it is to wear. The longer the fibers, the less it wrinkles after washing. That's why we only use 100% certified organic cotton with long cotton fibers (so-called "long staple" cotton) in our The Ambassador Polo and long-sleeved shirt.

The organic cotton we use in The Ambassador series is grown along the Aegean Sea in southwestern Turkey. We exclusively use organic cotton. So, no percentage of plastic is added to make the fabric even more stretchable, as you might often experience in "performance" clothing.

We don't do this because we could never dream of adding non-biodegradable synthetic fibers such as elastane, lycra, spandex, polyester, etc., to our polos.

Synthetic plastic fibers are the easy, cheap, and polluting method to give you stretch in your clothing. But all textiles that are used repeatedly will eventually lose some of their mass. This means that parts of the textile (microplastics) end up in the environment, either from washing or from contact with various surfaces.

We don't like microplastics; that's why we choose the natural alternative, even though it's a bit more complicated and costly.

And we are very confident that you will find there is enough stretch in your piqué polo and shirt from us.

That's why piqué polo fabric is a permanent part of our collection

We have long dreamed of also being able to offer more classic and timeless products to you - even during the warm summer months.

Although we spent the first many years focusing solely on business shirts, we now believe we have cracked the code for the polo, which we ourselves want to wear all summer. For of course, we should also be able to give you the opportunity to look sharp at the beach bar or sidewalk café when it's hot, or you just want a more informal look.
